OhChat measured against three alternatives, criterion by criterion
This site fixes five criteria for adult AI companion apps — persona control, memory span, content latitude, modality range and free-tier scope — then records how OhChat and three commonly shortlisted alternatives behave on each.

OhChat is a browser-based AI companion service for adults, built around personas you define yourself rather than pick from a catalogue. Measured against Janitor AI, Kupid AI and Simone AI, it records the strongest persona control and memory span of the four, and the narrowest modality range.

How it works
Read the criteria first
Five criteria are defined before any app is discussed. Skim them once: they determine every cell in the table and every number in the review.
Check the row, not the rank
Each row records how one app behaves on all five criteria. Rows follow a fixed order rather than a ranking, and the note flags the one exception worth knowing.
Verify on the free tier
Every app in the set offers some form of unpaid access. Ten minutes inside the two closest to your profile settles more than any comparison page, this one included.
Why OhChat
The three criteria OhChat leads on
Each entry states what the criterion measures, then what OhChat does on it. The remaining two criteria are recorded in the comparison table.

Persona control
Measures how much of a character you specify rather than select. OhChat starts from empty fields: tone, backstory, interests and stated limits are entries you fill in, not presets you accept.

Content latitude
Measures what a policy permits between adults and what it refuses outright. OhChat allows adult themes between fictional characters, and rules out real-person likeness and anything involving minors.

Memory span
Measures how far back the system draws and whether recall survives a closed session. Names, stated preferences and earlier events come back without being re-supplied each time.
How this comparison was assembled
Most companion-app comparisons start with a favourite and work backwards to the reasons. This one starts with five criteria, fixes their definitions, and then records what each app does. The definitions do not shift between rows, which is the only thing that keeps a table like this usable once you disagree with its conclusion.
A comparison is only as honest as the criteria it fixed before it started looking.
Persona control measures how much of a character you specify rather than accept. At one end of the range sit catalogues of ready-made bots; at the other, an empty form in which tone, backstory, interests and limits are all entries you fill in. Neither end is better in the abstract. The question is whether you would rather author a companion or browse one.
Memory span measures how far back a system reliably draws, and whether recall survives closing the tab. Short-window systems answer well inside one session and start over at the next. Longer-span systems reuse names, stated preferences and earlier events. The trade is control: a system that remembers more also carries forward whatever you told it early on, accurate or not.
Content latitude covers what a policy permits between adults and what it refuses outright — real-person likeness and anything involving minors are refused across every app in this set. Modality range covers whether a conversation is text only or adds voice and generated images. Apps built around media tend to record less persona depth, and the reverse holds about as often.
Free-tier scope measures what unpaid access actually covers: setup only, a metered sample, or an extended run of ordinary use. It is the criterion most worth testing rather than reading about, because it is also the one providers restate most frequently. Ten minutes in each free tier will settle more than any table, and that includes this one.
- Five criteria, defined before any app was opened
- The same definitions applied to every row
- Capabilities described in general terms, no prices quoted
- Companions are fictional characters; adults only
Criterion weighting
Which criterion should decide it for you?
Four questions, no sign-up. The result names the criterion your usage depends on, and points you at the column of the comparison table to read first.
Question 1/4
Which of these would irritate you most?
What the OhChat free tier covers
The persona builder is available in full, along with an extended run of text conversation, and no card is requested at sign-up. Voice and image features sit on the paid tier. Treat unpaid access as the cheapest way to test the two criteria you weighted most.
- Full persona builder, no card at sign-up
- Extended text conversation before any paywall
- Voice and images reserved for the paid tier
What members say
Real conversations, real connection
“I came for the table and stayed for the definitions. Knowing what memory span actually meant here saved me two subscriptions I would have regretted.”
“Unexcited writing about apps that usually get written about breathlessly. I checked three of the claims against the free tiers myself and they held up.”
“The unpaid-access column was what decided it. I ended up on OhChat, but the reasoning was mine — the page never told me which one to take.”
